Candidates File For City Aldermen

FARMINGTON, LINCOLN HAVE CONTESTED RACES

- By Lynn Kutter

Farmington and Lincoln city councils each will have a contested race in the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

In Farmington, Howard Carter is challenging incumbent Shelly Parsley for Ward 4, Position 2. This is the second time Carter has run against Parsley. In November 2014, Parsley was re-elected with 52 percent of the vote.

In Lincoln, incumbent Troy Myers is being challenged by Douglas Curtsinger for Ward 2, Position 1.

Prairie Grove City Council does not have any contested races.

In addition, the election ballot will not list any candidates running for two positions on Lincoln City Council and one position on Prairie Grove City Council.

The deadline to file as a municipal candidate was Aug. 19.

According to the Washington County Clerk’s Office, Lincoln Alderman Doyle Dixon submitted his paperwork on the last day to file for Ward 4, Position 1 but his petition did not have 30 signatures from registered voters. A few of the people who signed did not live in Lincoln city limits.

The other vacant Lincoln seat, Ward 3, Position 2, is currently held by Gary Eoff. Eoff was appointed to the position on Oct. 13, 2014, to replace Carl Holcraft, who had resigned due to a job change. Eoff did not file to run for the position.

In Prairie Grove, no one filed for Ward 4, Position 2. Casey Copeland holds that position and last week said he had just been too busy with work and family to have time to gather signatures. His plan is to hopefully continue in the position, he said by email.

According to state law, if no one files for an open position, the person already in the position continues to serve, unless that incumbent decides to resign the seat or is ineligible for some reason.

In Farmington, candidates elected to Position 1 for each ward will serve a four-year term, beginning Jan. 1, 2017. Those elected to Position 2 for each ward will serve a two-year term. In November 2018, candidates for Position 2 will be running for a fouryear term.

In Prairie Grove, only candidates running for the Position 2 seat of each ward are on the ballot. These candidates are running for four-year terms. Those aldermen serving the Position 1 seats were elected to fouryear terms in November 2014.

Lincoln City Council members serve for two years.
