LINCOLN UTILIZES PASSING GAME FOR BIG PLAYS

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — One week after having interceptions returned 100 and 50 yards for touchdowns, senior quarterback Harrison Swayne was not gun shy about doing what Lincoln coach Don Harrison asked him to do

Swayne accounted for all six of Lincoln’s touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a crucial 41-13 Homecoming victory over Berryville at Wolfpack Stadium Friday. His pinpoint accuracy, completing 11 of 15 passes for 215 yards and 5 touchdowns with no interceptions, was a testament to both his field vision and solid protection behind his offensive line. Harrison admitted he was surprised at times by Swayne’s on-the-field decisions but pleased with result.

“He was really seeing the field tonight,” Harrison said. “First of all I’m so short that I don’t have the best vantage point. There were times I’d ask ‘Where’s he throwing it.’ Then, I’d see him hit a guy for a touchdown.”

Harrison credited Swayne with having a good week of preparation going into the Homecoming game.

“We just trusted what the coaches told us to do,” Swayne said. “It worked out really well for us.

Swayne was hampered by injuries and didn’t finish Lincoln’s game against Gravette, yet said he felt good against Berryville. “I have no complaints, they (the offensive line) did a great job of blocking.”

Three of Swayne’s touchdown passes went to his close friend, tight end Dalton Lee, who scored on pass receptions of 54, 53 and 45 yards. This was the combination that provided Lincoln’s answer each time Berryville threatened to get on a roll, something Harrison was concerned about, noting the Bobcats scored 52 points in a shootout with Gentry the week before. Berryville quarterback Luke Britt capped an 11- play, 56-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run that tied the game on Josh Gibbs’ extra-point kick with 3:54 to go in the first quarter.

A penalty erased a Swayne completion to tailback Caleb Lloyd that would have given the Wolves a first- and- goal at the Bobcat four on the ensuing drive. Lincoln turned the ball over on downs and Berryville drove near midfield before a prolonged injury time-out disrupted their momentum. A Bobcat player sustained a broken leg and had to be carefully removed from the playing field and transported by ambulance to the hospital. Facing fourthand-six, Lincoln made the most of a chance just before halftime. Swayne connected with Lee on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the second quarter. Jason Swain’s kick gave the Wolves a 14-7 halftime lead.

“I seen they were dropping back,” Lee said. “The safety was dropping off. I just ran to the open place and got open. Harrison and I are pretty close. We know how to read each other.”
