Disappointing Loss For Lincoln Wolves

- From Staff Report

HUNTSVILLE — Lincoln jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and stayed ahead, 20-14, at halftime, but couldn’t contain a Huntsville comeback and lost 36-34 Friday. The loss seriously damaged Lincoln’s playoff hopes with both teams entering the contest in a battle for the fifth playoff berth from the 4A-1.

Huntsville got touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Sean McCone, who didn’t throw very often, completing 4 of 5 passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. His only incompletion was caught by the Wolves making an interception on defense. Huntsville senior Jaron Evans (18 rushes, 122 yards, 2 touchdowns) was the workhorse in the Eagles’ running attack which piled up 269 yards on 42 rushes for an average run of 6.4-yardsper-carry. Evans also scored on a 26-yard pass from McCone. Senior Alfredo Benavidez added 68 yards on 6 rushes and McCone gained 47 yards on 10 runs. McCone twice converted 2-point runs and passed to Tyler Welch for a third 2-point conversion. The Eagles’ Lukas Ray, a 6-feet-1, 176-pound senior linebacker scored with a fumble recovery.

With the loss, Lincoln falls to 2-5, 1-3 in conference, a game behind Huntsville which improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Wolves host Shiloh Christian Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Wolfpack Stadium.
