Washington County Enterprise-Leader
Win Over 6A
Cyclones breeze through the set and closed to within, 19-15, following Phelan’s ace and a Russellville hitting error. The Cyclones recovered their momentum and won, 25-19, on Pehrson’s kill to force a tiebreaker.
Farmington played for keeps in the fifth set, taking a 4-1 lead after a pair of Bates’ kills. Myers got Russellville within, 4-3, with a block-kill, but Farmington used a 6-1 run featuring Bates’ pair of aces. The 10-4 lead put pressure on Russellville. The Cyclones managed to narrow the lead to 11-8, but Farmington did not allow them to get any closer. Kailee Purifoy (dig), Harper (set) and Oxford (kill) teamed up to break the run. Bates then came up with a huge back-row kill. A net serve startled the Cyclones before falling back, but they were on the ropes and Farmington pressed their advantage. Phelan and Harper worked to set up Bates, whose hit gave Russellville trouble. They couldn’t play the ball back over, bringing Farmington to match-point, at 14-9. Brandy Wallace served for the win and the Cyclones again experienced problems. Wilbers’ hit went out-of-bounds, giving Farmington a 15-9 victory.
The aftermath of the competition brought a bitter-sweet conclusion for Farmington’s eight seniors: Bates, Dutton, Harper, Payton Holder, Kailey Larkins, Oxford, Phelan and Wallace.
“That was the first 6A team in our conference we beat, which is a big deal,” Harper said. “I’m a little emotional right now because of my family, this team is like my family. My family isn’t going to be home anymore. We’ve got to go beat people at their house.”
