- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Cardinal senior Peyton Maxwell qualified for the 5A State tennis tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Hot Springs. The tournament was hosted by Hot Springs Lakeside High School. Maxwell lost, 62-, 6-0, to his firstround opponent Noah McClanahan, of Hot Springs.

The winner of that match advanced to a quarterfinal match against the winner of a first-round match between Hunter Harrison, of Pulaski Academy; and Blake Moore, of Nettleton. Harrison figured to be among the top seeds in the tournament. He dominated last year, winning the 2015 state singles title in 5A with wins over Trent Swaim, of Batesville, 6-0, 6-0; Noah Ross, of Lakeside, 6-0, 6-0; Matt Phillips, of Valley View, 6-3, 6-1; and Stuart Riser, of Little Rock Christian, 6-2, 6-3. Harrison then went on to win the 2015 Arkansas tournament of champions, defeating Kyle Hudson, of Pottsville, 6-0, 6-0; Braydon Montgomery, of Van Buren, 6-1, 6-0; and in a rematch of the 5A state final, again beat Riser, of Little Rock Christian, 6-4, 6-4. First-year Farmington tennis coach Denver Holt took a full team to the district tournament. Among those competing for the Cardinals were: Caleb Lipford and Coleman Warren in boys singles; Noah Disheroon and Josh Jowers in boys doubles; and Meredith Dooly, Sam Trolio and Reagan White in girls singles.
