Important Road Win

-

ALMA — The Farmington girls basketball team made the last basket in stealing a dramatic 42- 41 road win at Alma Jan. 17 on Camryn Journagan’s layup with 14 seconds left.

Journagan’s heroics came on the heels of Alma (8-8) misfiring at the free throw line with 38 seconds left on the clock. The Airedalettes could have extended their lead, but with the 1- and-1 the shooter has to make the first one to get a second free throw. They didn’t and Farmington ( 14- 3) worked their offense. The initial shot (a 3- point attempt) didn’t go down, but Journagan got to the rebound and scored to push the Lady Cardinals into the lead.

Farmington led 27-25 at halftime with sophomore Madisyn Pense scoring 13 points in the second period. She had 16 for the game. In contrast, Journagan played through foul trouble and had 4 points total, none bigger than the winning bucket. Alma was led by Kailey Fagan with 22 points. Her 3- pointer at the 4: 48 mark pushed Alma ahead, 39-38, during a see-saw battle in the fourth quarter.

Farmington knuckled down on defense and rebounding to hold Alma scoreless for the next 2: 13, only allowing two points over the final 4:48. Alma had no points in the last two minutes and missed a shot at the buzzer. Makenna Vanzant added 11 points to help the Lady Cardinals improve to 3- 0 in the 5A West. Abbye Ostrander added 10 points for Alma, but only four Airdallettes scored in the contest.

In the 5A West subdivision ( west), Farmington, Alma, Harrison and Clarksville are contending for seeding against 5A West eastern subdivision teams, Vilonia, Greenbrier, Morrilton and Maumelle, for the post-season 5A-West district tournament. The four first- round winners qualify for the Class 5A state tournament in Magnolia.
