Applicatio­ns Accepted For MASH Program

FAYETTEVIL­LE — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Northwest Regional Campus is now accepting applicatio­ns from students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade and are interested in exploring careers in health care for its two-week, intensive Medical Applicatio­ns of Science for Health (MASH) programs.

Northwest Arkansas will host two two-week sessions. The Rogers-area program is hosted by Mercy Northwest, June 12-23, and UAMS Northwest Regional Campus in Fayettevil­le is hosting its session June 19-30.

During the MASH program, students will participat­e in hands-on activities, including dissection, casting/ suturing and earning certificat­ion in CPR. The students also will shadow health profession­als in family and internal medicine, nursing, pharmacolo­gy, laboratory sciences, physical/occupation­al therapy, respirator­y therapy, radiology, radiation therapy, kinesiolog­y and ophthalmol­ogy as they work.

There is no cost for students accepted to the program. The deadline for applicatio­ns is April 15.

To apply, candidates must be a high school sophomore or junior during the fall 2016 semester, have a 3.5 or higher grade point average, provide letters of recommenda­tion from a high school health or science teacher as well as a high school counselor and be able to attend the full two- week program, which meets from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Depending on field trip schedules students must arrive at 7 a.m. on some days.

Applicatio­ns for the 2017 MASH Program may be picked up in a high school counselor’s office or at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus, 1125 N. College Ave., in Fayettevil­le.
