Farmington Senior Signs Letter Of Intent

FARMINGTON — Farmington High School senior Jessika Calhoon signed a letter of intent last week to participate on the livestock judging team at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Okla.

Jade Jenkins, the team’s coach, said she is looking forward to Calhoon being a member of her team.

“She’s a bright young lady who’s done very well in livestock judging and we hope she has a bright future at Eastern,” said Jenkins, who was on hand for the signing.

Calhoon was a member of Farmington FFA’s livestock judging team that won the state championship in 2016 and then finished third in the nation. The team, all young ladies, won the state contest by a 56-point margin, the largest margin in the state competition in the past 10 years.

Clayton Sallee, FFA sponsor and Farmington agriculture teacher, said judging livestock on the collegiate level will be a great opportunity for Calhoon.

“Her hours and hours have paid off,” Sallee said. “She has a bright future and made a good decision in pursuing livestock judging. It teaches critical thinking skills and speaking skills. A lot of skills you use on a daily basis.”

Calhoon said she will attend Eastern, a two-year college, and then go to University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Her plan is to earn an undergraduate degree in early childhood development and a master’s degree in agriculture business.
