Show Cars To Enjoy

About 100 vehicles registered for the sixth annual Chicken Rod Nationals Car Show on Saturday, held at Lincoln Square. George Schooler of Lincoln looks over a 1929 Ford Sedan. The event included live music by Boston Mountain Playboys, barbecue sandwiches, hamburgers, snow cones and door prizes.

LINCOLN — Members of Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce closely watched the weather last week when forecasts were calling for a rainy Saturday for the Lincoln Chicken Rod Nationals Car Show.

Their fretting was for naught, as the weather turned out perfect for the day, partly cloudy and much cooler temperatures for this time of year.

“We couldn’t ask for better weather,” said Heather Keenan, chamber president. “It’s beautiful and everyone loves the square.”

About 100 antique and classic cars, along with rat rods and more modern vehicles, surrounded Lincoln Square for visitors to see and enjoy. Boston Mountain Playboys provided live music and concessions were available from Lincoln High Project Graduation, Lincoln Bright Futures and Lincoln High School band boosters.

Proceeds from the car show benefited Lincoln Pound Pals and the Chamber usually nets $700-$1,000 each year, said Keenan.

Joe and Monica Foster of West Fork brought their 1960 Volkswagen single cab pickup. Monica Foster said she likes the Lincoln car show because it has mostly older cars. A lot of the shows have vehicles new off the car lot, she said.

“This is just a cool show,” said Joe Foster.

Terry Bryson of Lincoln recently bought his first classic car, a 1926 Ford Model T, and registered for his first car show.

“I basically got to the point where I could buy one so I bought one,” Bryson said. “I’m not out for points or trophies, just for the fun of it.”

Dan and Luann Lancaster of Lincoln have participated in the Lincoln car show each year.

“We like community events and small town living,” Luann Lancaster said. “We love Lincoln.”

Winners for the 2017 Chicken Rod Nationals include Best in Show: 1955 Ford Fairlane owned by Jim Gattis; Best Bike: Honda Trike owned by Keith Cohea; Best VW: 1060 Volkswagen owned by Joe Foster; Oldest: 1923 Ford Model Pickup owned by Frank Birmingham.

Other trophies were given to Bill Runyan for Best Chopped, a 1937 Chevrolet; Martin Meek for Best Engine, a 1932 Ford; Flat Broke Farms for Best Paint, a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1; Easton Buckner for Coolest 4x4 truck, a 1952 Ford 4 WD.
