Recycling Pickup Gone From Lincoln

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

When it was announced that the recent wild fires were in Ventura County, Calif., I was really concerned. When cousins Ivan Cushing and Wanda Brakebill failed to answer their phones, I called Wanda’s daughter in Arizona. She said they were evacuating, but there are three roads leading out of their town, and two of them were blocked, so they were having trouble. The last thing her mother had said was “Pray for us.”

A few days later my phone rang several times, an out of area number that I thought to be a scam. Then it dawned on me, that number was from California. The next time it rang, I answered, and Wanda said, “Marie are you all right?” (She was worried about me!) They were home, and miraculously, their home was spared, as was Ivan’s, with smoke the only trouble.

She called this week and said they have some smoke filters that really help. The fires were still raging not far away.

About 25 years ago, Mayor Ruth Parker, with her care to promote our town, acquired the recycling pick-up for Lincoln, among other growth ideas. These days, there is another empty spot in our town, as Monday, Dec. 11, was the last pick up in Lincoln. The only thing left is to take the recycling to Boston Mountain in Prairie Grove or send it to the land fill.
