Fourth Quarter Explosion Not Enough For Lady Cardinals To Beat Greenwood
FARMINGTON — A 36-point offensive explosion in the fourth quarter against 6A Greenwood wasn’t enough to overcome three quarters of frustration working against the Lady Bulldogs’ half-court trap.
The Farmington girls basketball team came up four points short and suffered its first loss at home this season, 63-59, on Jan. 9. The game was tied four times in the first 3:19, the last of which came at 9-9 when Alexis Roach attacked the goal, drew a foul and sank both charity shots. Greenwood then went on a 22-4 tear to close out the first half capitalizing upon oodles of Farmington turnovers. The Lady Cardinals had trouble figuring out how to operate against Greenwood’s constant trapping in halfcourt sets.
Greenwood led 31-13 at the half and 44-23 after three quarters before Farmington solved the riddle and erupted for 36 points in the final eight minutes of play. Greenwood junior guard Kyiah Julian scored 23 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter. She had two 3-pointers and went 3-for-4 at the foul line down the stretch. Freshman guard Kinley Fisher started and scored 13 for Greenwood.
Sophomore guard Makenna Vanzant, who also started last season as a freshman, led Farmington with 19 points. Madisyn Pense added 17 and junior forward Alexis Roach contributed 14.
