Ag — Friends, Competitions, Fun

- By Averi Massey

Why should you take an agriculture class? Ag classes are so much more than “cows and stuff,” which is what most people associate ag with. I never could have seen myself taking an Ag class, let alone enjoying it. With taking an agriculture class in high school, I have been given so many fun, exciting opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Ag classes aren’t anything like your normal everyday classes. They are much more exciting and easier to love. In my agriculture class, I have gotten pet CPR certified, competed in Vet Science for a career development event, and have had the exposure to many cool, academic and fun events through Ag. My favorite ag experience is competing in district at Arkansas Tech in Russellville. The atmosphere at contests is competitive, nerve-wracking, but exhilarating at the same time.

My second favorite experience is show day at the county fair. You get out of school, and go up to the fair grounds and watch people show all day long. Before I moved to Lincoln I never would have imagined that I would show pigs at the county fair, but I gave it a chance and it turned out to be really fun and educational at the same time. It taught me life skills because I had an animal that was dependent on me for life. Being in an agriculture class has taught me so many life skills and has allowed me to make lifelong friendships that I never would have had if I hadn’t taken an ag class.
