Decoration Day Brings Family Together

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

We’re thankful we’re not in the middle of a drought!

Last Tuesday, I thought the grass would be dry enough by 5 to mow, but at 5 it started to rain.

The next day, it started raining early, about 10 a.m. and what a rain storm! With thunder and lightning and a real downpour for two hours, we received 5.1 inches. My yard was completely covered in water, running like a river. The water from six road ditches collect in one spot, the entrance to a branch that runs down through the field south of my house, and when it can’t carry it all, it backs up across my yard. Then, after the water ran down, it left a mess of leaves, limbs and grass over the yard, which had to be raked up before mowing. (part of the yard). The back yard is still so muddy, it still hasn’t been mowed.

Now, haying season, hopefully it will be fair weather for that.

Decoration Day was again reunion time for our family, with at least 43 attending the all day affair at Johnny and Anna Cheatham’s home, coming from all over N.W. Arkansas. Don and Diana Bradley, their daughter and family, Felicia and Ramon Rameriz and daughters, came from Okmulgee, Okla., and brought their friend Debbie. Another guest was a friend, Jan Wilson from Rogers.

After the regular Arkansas potluck meal, my granddaughter, Karen, surprised me (again) with another birthday cake. It was huge, bordered with pictures of quilt blocks, the birthday greeting in the center. In addition, she decided that I should have one with flowers, so she made a smaller one, covered with flowers.

Who minds getting a year older?

Happy birthday to Vicky Hansen, Misty Cheatham, Payton Roy, Clint Neff, David Jones, James Hodge, Marty Spears, Saundra Watson, Chris Borchardt, Sam Hannah, Betty Thompson, Robin Moore.

Happy anniversary to David and Carolyn Latta.

Happy years, all!
