Analyzing The Logistics Of Rodeo’s Date Change

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — Three weeks of rodeos factored into the switch from the originally scheduled dates of May 17-19 to the postponed 65th annual Lincoln Rodeo now set for Aug. 9-11.

The ACRA did not answer telephone calls Monday morning, but Lindsay Whelchel, who handles membership and communications, for the IPRA explained that because the ACRA has first sanction for the Lincoln Rodeo, the IPRA specific rules and processes for moving a rodeo’s date don’t apply.

“Of course we want to see all rodeos we are involved with succeed to the best of their ability, and there are a lot of factors that go into that from scheduling, sponsorships and local support, the weather and so much more,” Whelchel stated in an email.

Added Money

Another factor listed based on available information is added money. The total prize money in any rodeo event consists of entry fees paid by the contestants. Additional dollars put up by the rodeo committee is called added money. Should an event be canceled for lack of entries, the purse money put up for the canceled event is generally added to other events. Added money is donated to the rodeo committee by sponsors to attract contestants to the rodeo for competition. Theoretically, the more added money, the greater appeal a rodeo presents for drawing potential contestants.

Since rodeo standings are determined by the sum total of all prizes won competing in a particular event over the course of a season, added money plays a distinct role.

Ultimately rodeo championships are determined by the amount of prize money won. Cowboys and cowgirls in the upper echelon of total prize money won are invited to compete in the finals at the end of the year. Those who don’t win enough money won’t make the finals.

Rodeo Schedule

This is not a comprehensive list, but the information does provide an overview of what the Lincoln Rodeo is up against.

Distances and drive times to-and-from preceding rodeos, competing rodeos and succeeding rodeos calculated within a 500-mile radius from Lincoln show at least 11 different rodeos scheduled for part or all of the same dates.

For cowboys and cowgirls, who might be traveling to Lincoln from a prior competition nine rodeos scheduled between Aug. 2 and Aug. 5 show up on the radar.

Eleven rodeos are scheduled after the Lincoln Rodeo from Aug. 15 to Aug. 18, which might attract competitors following the circuit beyond Lincoln.
