- By Mike Eckels

LINCOLN — The Decatur Bulldog boys basketball team traveled south into Wolves’ country to participate in the first annual Turkey Shoot Basketball tournament in the gym at Lincoln High School Nov. 19-21 for a three game series.

First up was the host Lincoln Wolves. The Bulldogs jumped out in front in the first minute of the opening quarter. But as quickly as the Bulldogs got on the points Lincoln shut them down, allowing Decatur only four points for the remainder of the quarter. This allowed the Wolves to build an eight point lead going into the second quarter.

Decatur came alive in the second quarter, keeping pace with the stronger Lincoln team. But Decatur was unable to overtake the Wolves and ended the half down by 10. The Bulldogs continued to keep pace with the Wolves throughout the second half but were never able to cut into their point deficit.

Lincoln defeated Decatur 49-38 to advance to the semifinal round in the winner’s bracket while the Bulldogs dropped into the loser’s bracket to face the Future School of Fort Smith Nov. 20.

Decatur tried to get back into the contest in the second half but the Future School Rockets lead was too much as the Bulldogs went down to defeat 47-30. The Rockets advanced to the third place round against the Gentry Pioneers while the Bulldogs wound up in the fifth place round Nov. 21 against the Lincoln junior varsity Wolfpack.

In the Bulldogs’ final game of the tournament the Lincoln JV Wolfpack controlled the entire contest, outscoring Decatur in every quarter to take the win 59-32 and fifth place. The Decatur Bulldogs finished in sixth place for the three day tournament.
