Devil’s Den To Host Backpacking Workshop
Devil’s Den State Park in West Fork will host a Backpacking Adventure Workshop in two parts. Part One is April 12-14, and Part Two is May 4-5. Deadline to register is April 1.
Cost for both parts of the workshop is $50 (nonrefundable) per person and is required at registration. Camping is included during the workshop with camping spots available to workshop attendees on Friday and Saturday nights (April 1213) and overnight camping on the Butterfield Trail on Saturday night, May 4. If participants prefer to stay in a fully-equipped cabin or camper cabin on the first weekend instead, they will need to cover those fees separately. The workshop is offered only to those 18 or older.
Part One explores backpacking preparation, skills, techniques and equipment. Participants will meet other outdoor enthusiasts, test equipment, and gain skills to keep their backpacking adventure safe and fun. Some topics covered in this session include trekking footwear, packs, sleep systems, food, water filtration, and fire building. On Sunday, several outdoor stores and organizations will demonstrate equipment and there may be purchasing opportunities.
During Part Two of the workshop, participants will test their backpacking skills on a hike and overnight camp on the 15-mile Butterfield Backpacking Trail. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own equipment as the park will have a limited amount of equipment and supplies. The early part of May should be beautiful hiking/backpacking weather, but there could be rain. Participation in Part One is required for participation in Part Two.
Granted, backpacking isn’t for everyone, but those who take part in this recreational activity seem to be more self-aware and adventurous. Attendees will come away with new backpacking skills and a memorable park experience. Register for the workshop at the park’s visitor center or call the park at (479) 761-3323 for more information.
