Always Lock The Gate!

- MARIE ROY WCEL Columnist

Another Monday holiday, Columbus Day, was this week, so Sunday, Monday and Tuesday papers will all come on Tuesday since ours is delivered by mail now. Talk about “old news,” which we have already seen on TV.

To brighten the days, children and grandchildren have visited all of Sunday and Monday. Those who came on Monday, two young ones have a three-day holiday from school. I can’t believe how fast they grow!

A local farmer was headed to the sale barn with a load of cattle, and noticed that one calf was where it wasn’t supposed to be! In checking, he found others had also gotten out. With the help of friends and neighbors, all were corralled, three head ended up in a neighbor’s field. So the following little verse came to my mind.

I did ask God to give you

A good, safe trip to relate;

But I didn’t know to ask Him

To lock the gate.

When you think again about it,

And the memory begins to abate,

Just think of it as a lesson.

Always lock the gate.

We know that life is always

Full of blunders - that’s our fate,

But remedy is available

Remember — lock the gate.

It’s a fact that all cattlemen

Have a phrase that they hate.

“Cows out” is not welcome! oh, oh,

We forgot to lock the gate!

On the job daily, much to do,

Leave early, come in late,

After herding run-aways.

Because we didn’t lock the gate.

Sometimes we need to sit back,

Think on things and wait, slow down, look up, be thankful count our blessings

And remember to lock the gate!

As I said he had lots of help, and support later, of many others who had done the same thing, though some of them had lost some of theirs.

Happy birthday to Reba Tittle, Phyllis Reed, Josh Myers, Courtney Madewell.

Happy anniversary to Jack and Nicci Patrick.

Happy years, all!
