Junior Cardinals Shut Out Southwest
FARMINGTON — The junior Cardinals prevailed, 20-0, over Southwest Junior High, of Springdale, in 7A West Junior High Football action a Cardinal Stadium Thursday, Oct. 17.
With the win Farmington improved to 4-3 in league play. Farmington head junior high coach Cody Napier praised the defense while taking note of the shutout.
“Our defense did a great job. They don’t back down. They line up with those bigger schools and go toe-to-toe with them,” Napier said. “I’m really proud of that.”
Defense provided the first score of the game when Farmington smothered the Southwest quarterback in the end zone after the center snapped the ball over his head giving the hosts a 2-0 first quarter lead at Cardinal Stadium.
Southwest kicked off from the 20 and Napier was pleased with execution on special teams.
“We had a good return set up and Sam Wells about went to the end zone,” Napier said.
Southwest got him down at the 20 and on the next play, Landyn Faught took care of the remaining yardage by scoring on a touchdown run.
Faught added another 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter giving Farmington a 14-0 halftime lead.
Late in the third quarter, Farmington quarterback Cameron Vanzant passed to Wells for 12-yard touchdown to round out the scoring. The sustained drive put the junior Cardinals ahead, 20-0, at the end of the third quarter giving their coach something to smile about.
“The kids moved it, they converted first downs,” Napier said.
Neither offense scored in the fourth and Farmington claimed the 20-0 victory.
