PG Girls Short At Pea Ridge

- By Mark Humphrey

PRAIRIE GROVE — Prairie Grove allowed only one double digit quarter by Pea Ridge, but that was enough for the Lady Blackhawks to eke out a 41-37 girls basketball win Friday, Feb. 7.

Pea Ridge outscored the Lady Tigers 18-8 in the third and the loss lowered Prairie Grove (9-14, 3-7) one rung below Pea Ridge (17-7, 4-6) in the 4A-1 West Division standings with one week left in regular season play.

Trailing 36- 25 after a basket by Pea Ridge’s Aiden Dayberry, Prairie Grove took advantage of the absence of Lady Blackhawk leading scorer, Blakelee Winn, who left with an injury in the third quarter after scoring a game-high 13 points, and Pea Ridge’s only senior, Allisa Short, going to the bench with four fouls.

Prairie Grove has no seniors on its roster, yet over a three minute period, the Lady Tigers scored 10 straight points using a combination of six free throws and a pair of short-range baskets closing to within 36-35.

Pea Ridge reinserted Short, who made a basket, followed by Aidan Dayberry and Lauren Wright combining to make 3-of-4 free throws. Prairie Grove couldn’t find the basket until getting a layup with 7 seconds left and lost 41-37.

Prairie Grove plays host to the District 4A-1 tournament Feb. 17-22 at Tiger Arena.

Torie Price and Jasmine Wynos accounted for all of Prairie Grove’s points in the first quarter which ended in a 7-7 tie.

Wynos hit a jumper to start the second and Abby Preston nailed a trey giving Prairie Grove a 12-7 lead. Pea Ridge then scored eight straight points but the Lady Tigers reclaimed the lead on a layup by Wynos and Arianna Harrel’s 3-point play to take a 17-16 at the half.

Pea Ridge held a 34-25 lead going into the fourth quarter and bumped that up to 36-25 on a Dayberry basket before Prairie Grove’s late rally came up short.

Wynos achieved a double-double leading the Lady Tigers with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists.
