Arias of the lands
September 17 to October 1, Acosta Strong Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will present a retrospective exhibition for internationally recognized landscape painter Evelyne Boren. Working in both watercolor and oil for the past 50 years, the artist is recognized for her bold and colorful scenes of places she has traveled. Imagery spans from the deserts of New Mexico to the countryside of France, allowing collectors to find works that connect them to all parts of the world.
“The key characteristics of my work have always been color and capturing a mood or feeling with as few colors as possible,” says Boren. “What draws me to a subject matter has to do with light and shade, as well as design. If that is not exactly the way I would like it, I don’t hesitate to change it to give it a better design by doing some fast charcoal sketches or small color studies. I don’t start my painting until I have worked out these details.” Boren enjoys going out into nature to gather inspiration. She will make small sketches in watercolor, oil or charcoal, as well as take photographs. When she returns to the studio, Boren paints the larger piece.
For the exhibition, Acosta Strong will display works such as Full Moon over Abiquiu Lake and Morada de las Golondrinas, where there are rugged terrains. Of the former work, she says, “I enjoyed capturing the muted foreground so the eye leads you directly to the full moon, creating a mystical feeling.” In the other work, she showcases the Morada at the top of the hill and has found in the springtime the area is filled with blossoming apple trees while the fall brings about the oranges and yellows of the cottonwoods.
“My paintings are all about sharing beautiful arias in the world through my eyes and emotions that each new place gives me,” says Boren. “Often we go through life not really seeing; I feel so fortunate being an artist and seeing the world with all its nuances.”
In addition to the exhibition, Acosta Strong Fine Art will present the artist’s new retrospective book. There will be 75 limited collector’s editions of the book available that are signed, numbered and come with an original 10-by-10-inch painting—50 of which are oils and 25 that are watercolor. There also will be 20 examples of her larger scale works on view at the gallery, which will host a reception and book signing September 21 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
