Gravette PAWS students recognized

-

GRAVETTE — Malliya Davis, Couri Eden, Christopher Guy, Aaron Pearson and Naomi Pruitt, all of Gravette, and Garrett Haley of Bentonville were honored as December PAWS (“Pawsitive” and Wise Students) award winners last week at Glenn Duffy Elementary School. PAWS award winners were recognized at the December Rise and Shine assembly and given T-shirts sponsored by the Glenn Duffy Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization.

The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. The word for this month is Courtesy. This means being friendly, warm-hearted and generous. Mother Teresa remembered to say, “People should see kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile.”

Richard Page, Gravette superintendent of schools, taught a brief lesson about courtesy at the assembly. He gave examples of how adults often show courtesy to others in public and in the workplace. Page also engaged children with scenarios of how to show acts of courtesy at home, on school buses, in classrooms and in hallways. Children were able to spell and cheer the word courtesy as the lesson ended.

Second grade teachers presented a lively skit about the social skill for the month. The social skill is Waiting for Your Turn. Steps are: 1) get into listening position; 2) take a deep breath and count to five; 3) say, “I know I can wait for my turn”; 4) listen to what is being said or watch what is happening; and 5) walk away and do something else if waiting is too hard. Second grade teachers are Jennifer Davis, Angie Denver, Vicki Holloway, Jared Magness, Traci Rutledge and Amber Sisemore.

PAWS awards are given in the classroom, hallway and cafeteria as an incentive for students to practice the PAWS skill for the month.
