Decatur’s city pool attracts more than 100 on opening day

DECATUR — The Decatur municipal pool at Old City Park opened its doors to the public June 1 for the beginning of the 2017 summer season. More than 100 patrons flocked to the pool to enjoy its cool waters.

This season, the pool will have a new lifeguard crew on duty keeping watch over patrons. Heaven Butler, pool supervisor, Logan Auffet, Amanda Duncan and Savanna Dodson Trammell successfully completed the required training courses and are certified lifeguards.

Some things have changed this year: the paved parking lot and the one-way street in front of it. Last April, the Decatur City Council voted to make Pool Street one-way, with traffic heading southbound, and to revitalize the parking lot. This was necessary to ensure the safety of the patrons to the pool and allow easy access for emergency vehicles answering calls in the area.

The other rule change involves children under 6 years old. In addition to the requirement that an adult stay with the child at all times, any child in diapers will be required to wear a swim diaper.

Admission to the pool is $2 for all ages, with daycare service of $1. The city offers a season pass of $50 per individual. Each additional family member, up to four living in the same house, costs $10 each. Households with more than five immediate family members will be charged a flat rate of $100, which is payable at city hall.

Pool parties are available and must be booked at city hall. Basic cost for a party of one to 75 people with two lifeguards on duty is $100.

To celebrate the first day of summer on June 21, the pool will be free to swimmers.

The pool will wrap up the season on Aug. 11.

The pool is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
