Fishing derby set at Centerton fish hatchery

CENTERTON — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will sponsor a fishing derby this Saturday, June 10, at the Charlie Craig Fish Hatchery, 977 W. Fish Hatchery Road in Centerton, and at the other four state fish hatcheries operated by the commission.

The derbies are a feature of the annual Free Fishing Weekend, a tradition which allows both Arkansas residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy angling in Arkansas. Anyone may fish in Arkansas without a license or trout stamp from noon June 9 through midnight June 11. All the usual state regulations, such as daily limits and length limits, must be observed.

Fishing derbies are open to all, age 12 and younger. Each child will be allowed to use one fishing rod, and fishermen should bring their own bait. Each youngster must have adult supervision. Participants will also have an opportunity to compete in casting contests and win prizes for fish caught.

Each pond will be stocked with catchable-size channel catfish, and some fish will have special tags which will earn the young fishermen prizes. A BB gun range, archery range and canoes will also be available on the hatchery grounds.

“Fishing is never a sure thing, but this is one time I can almost guarantee everyone who comes will catch something,” said Chris Racey, chief of the Fisheries Division of Game and Fish. “Our hatchery staff take great pride in making these derbies a fun event, and often add a few extra-large bonus fish to give young anglers some added excitement.”

Racey said the weekend is a great time to introduce fishing to the family and to bring friends in from other states.

“It’s great for residents and nonresidents to meet up and head to a fishing destination,” Racey said. “Trout stamp requirements are waived as well, so our famous trout tailwaters are a great option for people wanting to try their hand at something different.”
