Area schools compete in indoor track meet

FAYETTEVILLE — With rain coming down in buckets over much of northwest Arkansas on Friday, athletes, coaches, families and friends gathered in the Randall Tyson Indoor Track Complex at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for the Arkansas Coaches Association’s 2018 Arkansas High School Indoor Track Meet.

Under warm, dry conditions, more than 300 athletes from 54 Arkansas high schools gathered for the 1A-4A track event. Included in those gathered at the Tyson facility were athletes from Gravette, Decatur and Gentry. Several athletes from those local schools brought home medals in 26 events.

Both Chastery Fuamatu and Mason Clark (2017 4A state champions) from Gentry took first place gold in the shot put, while Heidi Vinson took home a fifth-place medal in the pole vault. The Gentry 4x800 relay team earned a third-place bronze medal and finished in the 10th position in the 4x400 meter relay.

Gravette’s Aiden Patton finished in second place behind Mason in the shot put, with a throw of 4800.25.

Decatur had four athletes earning medals during this meet. Desi Meek, one of the Bulldogs’ top female athletes, earned second place in the 400-meter dash, third in the 60-meter hurdles and fifth in the 200-meter dash. Taylor Haisman, one of Decatur’s top male athletes, earned a third-place medal in the 800-meter run. Jimmy Mendoza earned a fourth-place medal in the high jump.
