Pioneers have good week in Arkansas but shut out in Oklahoma on Friday

GENTRY — The Pioneers defeated Lincoln and West Fork last week before falling in a Friday evening game at Kansas, Okla.

The Pioneers trailed the visiting Lincoln Wolves on March 6 until the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored 10 of their 12 runs to secure a 12-7 victory.

After Kyle Dilbeck singled on a fly ball to center and Ben Philpott and Isiah Lemke walked, Ayden Smartt hit a line-drive double to left center to bring in Dilbeck and Philpott. Smartt then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Dylan Rayburn to tie up the game at six each.

But Gentry wasn’t finished yet. Peyton Wright, who singled, scored on a pitcher’s error. Beau Tomblin made it home following a shortstop error. Rowdy Smith scored following a first-base error. And Ben Philpott singled on a ground ball to right field, bringing in Gary Cox, who was running for Dilbeck. Lemke and Philpott both scored a few plays later in the inning on errors, making it 12-6, Gentry. Lincoln added a solo run in the seventh, but that wasn’t enough and Gentry took the win.

Lemke, Rayburn and Smartt all pitched for the Pioneers in the game. Lemke was credited with the win.

Gentry 15 West Fork 5

The Pioneers led 5-0 after two innings but, when West Fork closed the gap to make it a 5-3 game, Gentry added another run in the bottom of the third and eight more in the bottom of the fourth to seal the win.

Peyton Wright was four for four with his bat and had three RBIs. He had two triples in the game.

Ayden Smart picked up three hits (including two doubles) and a walk in four at-bats and also drove in three. Ben Philpott had two hits and brought in two.

Kansas 5 Gentry 0

Things didn’t go as well for the Pioneers when they visited Kansas, Okla., on Friday. Kansas picked up runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings and shut out Gentry in the 5-0 loss for the Pioneers.

Gentry managed four hits in the game. Fifteen batters struck out at the plate.
