DECATUR — “The 2019 homecoming queen is…” said Jessica Thomas as she began to announce the winner of the 2019 Decatur High School homecoming queen title during the coronation ceremony at Peterson Gym Friday night.

Because of the recent rains and the condition of the football field at Bulldog Stadium, the ceremony was moved to Peterson Gym.

At 6:15 p.m., the bleachers were filled with family, friends and Bulldog football fans as they anticipated the naming of the queen and king. The first order of business was the introduction of the homecoming court and escorts.

The court consisted of freshman maid Jacey Smith, sophomore maid Anna Rodriguez, junior maids Amy Trans and Annabelle Schopper and their escorts Mason Potter, Edgar Herrera, Waylon Herrington and Victor Gonzalez.

Senior maids vying for the title of homecoming queen included Heidi Rubi, Deysi Rubi, Emmy Lee and Kaliey Sutherland. Escorts vying for the king’s title were Sam Philpott, Antonio Trejo, Javier Perez and Lauro Molina.

Rounding out this year’s court were crown and scepter bearers Kinlee Burr and Hunter Amos and their senior high cheerleader escorts Myra Flores and Ithzel Martinez and senior football player Seth Coleman. Once the court was introduced, it was time to name this year’s king and queen.

The 2019 king title went to Javier Perez. He was presented with an autographed football signed by the Decatur Bulldog varsity team. But an odd thing happened during his crowning. The traditional queen’s cape was pinned around Perez’ neck, which turned out to be a miscommunication between sponsors and the bearer escorts. Nevertheless, Perez continued to wear it through the remainder of the coronation ceremony.

Then a hush came over the crowd as Thomas announced the homecoming queen.

“And the 2019 homecoming queen is Emmy Lee,” said Thomas.

As the crowd stood and recognized the new king and queen, Perez pinned the crown in Lee’s hair.

The pair stood before the gathering of family, friends and Bulldog supporters for photos before it was time to move on the big event, the homecoming football contest between the Bulldogs and the Savages from Quinton, Okla.
