I like warmer days, sundown frog chorus

The special chicken coop and the precious hens are now needing attention. Can’t believe the chickens would have the nerve to mess in their new home and make it smelly and nasty! The nice feller that worked so hard to build the mansion for the cluckers has now been designated as the person to clean out the debris of a winter!

What? Did I hear that right? Me? Sure ’nuff! She said please and smiled like it was gonna be a ride in the park! Just take a few minutes to clean it out and the birds are laying those big wonderful eggs and did I enjoy them for breakfast! I am not anybody’s sucker and I stand firm on that! I just know what a real man does for his family and it only took all morning and some hard work.

The cattle are gaining right along on the thick grass. The spring work has begun and we are about an eighth done with more gathered for in the morning. Did I mention the nice green grass? Let me say this about that, not only does it produce fat slick cattle, it also produces liquid fertilizer! We would rather be less decorated but plenty of rain-produced feed is better than none at all and we have been there too! The weight gains have been encouraging and, if the market could climb a point or two, I would relax a little.

We’ve been in this business many years and I can tell by experience that things are going to get a lot tighter before we are done with this blight we are living with today. I will still stay with a cow/calf operation, just continue on and plant a bigger garden. I won’t sell out, move to town or lose my faith in Jesus, but I will keep on keeping on. The offspring have not lost one ounce of determination and are steady in the thoughts with me and my close relative.

I did mention the chickens, and I was happy to have the task of taking six dozen eggs to the neighbors on Sunday afternoon. I put eggs on the porch and waved to the folks looking out the windows. It is a privilege to share the results of all that chicken business with those who don’t have farm fresh eggs. My close relative went along for the ride and smiled, waved and made happy little remarks the entire time. She wanted me to say something about how wonderful it was to have fresh eggs to share. I didn’t! I am not about to open up for a bigger coop or maybe different species of birds like maybe turkeys.

It is my opinion, and everyone has one, this spring is sure welcome. I like the warmer days and the frog chorus at sundown. I enjoy the way the twilight seems to wrap around us as we have a last cup of coffee on the front porch. We have so many blessings and don’t even realize more than half of them daily but I am very thankful for them. Our family, farm, cattle and problems are all ours. We deal with them as we are able and say our prayers daily.

Call me if you find a sack full of dirty old money and I will describe it so you can bet it is the one I lost!
