DECATUR — When then Officer Steve Grizzle joined the Decatur Police Department in 2018, he had two goals in mind to strengthen his small town department. One of his goals was to organize fundraisers in order to get the necessary equipment to help fight crime in Decatur.

In June 2019, Grizzle organized and executed the first annual Decatur Police Department Golf Tournament in Cave Springs. The response to this fundraiser yielded the department much-needed equipment to continue its fight against crime. One such item was law enforcement stop sticks which were deployed for the first time during a high-speed chase from Siloam Springs that ended in Decatur on April 24.

This year’s tournament is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the Creeks Golf Course in Cave Springs. The tournament is a three-man scramble, and social distancing will be strictly enforced. Grizzle plans to observe all of Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s covid-19 mandates.

“Check-in will be held outside,” Grizzle explained. “We would ask that no large grouping be done, even to brag about how awesome they are going to be. The best part of the tournament will be food at the end, which will be ready for each player, to take home, or eat with social distancing in mind.”

The tournament cost is $100 per person and all golfers will play in threeman teams. The first-place team earns a $600 prize.

It costs money to put on this tournament and Grizzle is asking individuals, corporations and businesses to donate door prizes and monetary contributions to help with money prizes. Grizzle explains how he plans on recognizing anyone that helps sponsor this event.

“If they make a donation of prizes, or money up to $500, we mention them, giving them thanks and advertisement for backing our city police department,” said Grizzle. “Anything over $500, we make special mention of them several times, and we have a flag with their company logo; or, if they have a banner, we hang these at the tee box or greens so they have advertisement which everyone will see.”

Prizes include $50 for closest to the pin in the least amount of strokes, longest drive. Mulligans can be used to attempt closest to the hole shots. Each mulligan costs the golfer $5, with a maximum of five mulligans per person.

In addition to the prizes, the tournament will hold a silent auction for a pair of AR rifles.
