Gravette Day planned for Aug. 8

- KAREN BENSON Special to the Eagle-Observer

GRAVETTE — “I (Heart) Gravette” is this year’s Gravette Day theme. Because of the current covid-19 pandemic, the Aug. 8 event will have a different look and will feature a longer parade route, a door/porch decorating contest and pageants for Miss Gravette and Miss Teen Gravette.

Everyone is encouraged to “picnic on the porch” and enjoy the Gravette Day parade from their homes or from the comfort of their vehicles. Longtime Gravette business owners Berl Dean Harris and Mary Harris will serve as grand marshals. The parade route will start at the Gravette Middle School, pass the Gravette High School, wind through the Walnut Creek and Westfield neighborhoods and pass the Ozarks Community Hospital.

Entries for the door/ porch decorating contest should be submitted by Aug. 5. Judges will drive by each registered contestant’s house and gift cards in the amounts of $150, $100 and $50, provided by the Bank of Gravette, will be awarded for first, second and third place. Contestants must live within the Gravette city limits.

Miss Gravette and Miss Teen Gravette pageants will be held at the Gravette Civic Center. Attendance will be limited to the contestants, pageant staff and judges. The evening gown and onstage question portion of the event will be livestreamed at 2 p.m. on the “City of Gravette — Government” Facebook page.

Gravette Day T-shirts are available for purchase for $10 each and come in sizes Youth Large through Adult 3X. The T-shirts may be purchased at Gravette City Hall and the Gravette Public Library during regular operating hours.

In keeping with social distancing recommendations by the Arkansas Health Department, there will be no vendors or activities at Kindley Park or the Gravette Historical Museum. The annual car show, art show and Kiwanis pancake breakfast have been canceled, as well as pageants for younger age groups.

Additional information and entry forms for the door/porch decorating contest, Gravette Day parade and Miss Gravette/ Miss Teen Gravette pageant are available on the city of Gravette’s website at www. gravettar.com.
