Mysteries, no doubt, will continue

I was delighted to see my herd had grown by two this morning. Yes, two new calves had proceeded to make themselves at home with Snip and they were all three resting together, swishing flies and looked happy. They ate with Snip but had to sorta tiptoe to reach the feed. I watched a few minutes and then added some bonus feed so they could all feel full. No ear tags, no brands, and therefore it was anyone’s guess as to where they belonged. The last I saw of them, they were all three lying down and two were chewing their cud!

I checked the fence before I left to count cows and it was all good around the horse trap and the barn. How in the world the extra calves got in is beyond me. I told the offspring about them and they said they had not heard of anyone missing cattle.

We sure need rain. I am repeating myself, I know. The weeds along the road are so dusty they don’t even look real anymore. I found some pretty good grass in the trees at the rented place this morning but it was getting pale. I moved the old cows to new pasture and counted as they went through the gate. The dry grass almost crumbles when I step on it.

We are feeding supplements, as I am sure everyone is now. The nutrients are few in the straw that looks like grass and I am sure the cows will do better with a little extra. I have cubes in the truck everyday and feed some almost every pasture.

The expectant mothers are down to the line now. We will not be surprised to have a new calf at any time. They were all grazing along and watching if I was gonna pour some cubes before making the effort to get there! Of course, they have been petted and watched over so they expect only the best. Now we have had to watch the weight gain due to too many times of pouring out some cubes. I just admired them this morning.

The day went smoothly and, when I got ready to do the barn feeding, I had sorta forgotten about the calves in with Snip. They were surely being missed by some old cows somewhere. There they were, ready for feed and not a bawl from either one for their mammy. I fed and they ate with Snip again and seemed perfectly at home.

I began calling neighbors as soon as I got in the house. No one was missing any calves and yet there were two from somewhere in my lot. I called the sale barn feller and gave him the description and asked if he knew of any missing. No, not a single person had called him.

It is my opinion, and everyone has one, the mystery will continue until someone claims the wanderers; and now, how is he gonna prove they are his, another part of the mystery. Well, shoot! Life is a mystery anyway. We don’t think about it often but we don’t really know how ourselves work! Think about the work your liver does while you eat chili and tell me exactly how that comes out! How come your fingernails grow so fast and why does your lip get in the way and get bit so bad your eyes water? See, just mysteries!

Just take time to be known as the nice feller that smiles and opens doors for the ladies, like me!
