Since my office is in my home, I have also been spending a lot more time with a first-grade grandson who is attending school virtually this year due to the covid-19 pandemic and restrictions at the schools.

While seeing to it that he is on his Chromebook for Zoom meetings and then helping him do his homework in the afternoons has been a bit time-consuming, it also has its entertaining moments. One day last week included a couple of those moments.

Midway through his Zoom classes on Friday, I hear him calling for grandpa. When I open the door to his bedroom where he sits at his desk, he’s panting and acting as though he may draw his last breath at any moment and saying he thought he was dehydrated and needed me to bring him a drink.

Due to past experiences with spills and sticky stuff on his computer keyboard, I told him that his regular bathroom break was only a few minutes away and I would give him a drink while he was on break. Then, somehow, when his break came, he didn’t need a drink and seemed to miraculously recover from severe dehydration without a drop of water so that he could talk to his classmates over Zoom during the brief recess.

Later that morning, I peeked in and caught him lying in his bed with his Chromebook on his chest and watching as the teacher read a story. He quickly told me that it was OK because he was supposed to be comfortable.

When I told him I would ask his teacher about that, he begged me not to and quickly replied, “I can’t believe you caught me the first time I did that. You win this round, Grandpa!”

I can’t help but wonder what is coming up in the rounds ahead!
