Lady Pioneers win three, lose one in week of softball

GENTRY — After a loss in Harrison on Thursday, the Lady Pioneers returned to the Merrill Reynolds Memorial Sports Complex for a shutout win against Mansfield on Friday with freshman pitcher Hailie Kreger in the circle for Gentry.

Gentry pitcher Kyleigh Wheaton was given the day off with Kreger pitching for the Lady Pioneers in the shutout game. She allowed three hits in the shutout and struck out two Mansfield batters. She walked one.

Both teams were charged with two errors.

Mazzi Jones hit a home run in the bottom of the first. Faviola Lopez-Najar and Malea Wilson both picked up doubles in the game. The Lady Pioneers had nine hits and six runs in the game.

Gentry took the lead in its first at-bat when Mazzi Jones hit a solo home run to left-field.

Jones and Madi Voyles scored in the fifth when Malea Wilson doubled to center field. Afton Finnell brought Wilson home with a single to center.

Andrea Holzkamper (running for Taylor Norman, who singled to left) and Kreger (running for Randi Jo Bolinger, who singled to left-center) scored in the bottom of the sixth when Lopez-Najar doubled to right.

Harrison 3, Gentry 0

At Harrison on Thursday, the Lady Goblins scored three runs in the second and the Gentry girls were never able to get on the board and catch up.

Kyleigh Wheaton was in the circle for Gentry. She allowed three hits in the game, walked two and struck out nine.

The Lady Pioneers had four hits in the game, including a double by Mazzi Jones, but no one was able to make it around the bases in the game. Gentry was also charged with five errors to Harrison’s one.

Gentry 12, Providence Academy 2

The Lady Pioneers were able to finish off Providence Academy, 12-2, on March 16 with a fiverun fifth inning (with no outs) to build on seven runs earlier in the game.

Gentry scored a single run in the first, four in the second and solo runs in the third and fourth before the big fifth inning. The Lady Pioneers scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the game, while holding their opponents to two runs (in the third) on one hit.

Faviola Lopez-Vajar led Gentry with her bat with three hits, three runs and two runs batted in. She was credited with two triples in the game. Hailie Kreger also had a triple. Madi Voyles and Kyleigh Wheaton had doubles.

Hailie Kreger pitched four innings in the game, striking out eight and walking one. Kyleigh Wheaton pitched one inning and struck out two.

Gentry 19, Springdale 3

The Lady Pioneers made quick work of Springdale on Monday, March 15, taking the game in three innings, 19-3.

While Springdale picked up solo runs in each of the three innings, Gentry scored six runs in the first, seven in the second, and another six in the third for the win.

Mazzi Jones led the Lady Pioneers with four runs batted in on three hits during the short contest.

Randi Jo Bolinger, Liberty Brannon, Jones, Faviola Lopez-Najar and Kyleigh Wheaton all drove in runs in the second.

Wheaton earned the win for Gentry. She pitched two innings, allowing two runs on zero hits and striking out three. Hailie Kreger threw one inning in relief.

Gentry had 12 hits. Jones, Afton Finnell, Malea Wilson and Wheaton each had multiple hits for Gentry.
