Superintendent Watkins welcomes students to the new academic year
Dr. Steven Watkins, Superintendent of Schools for the Decatur School District, completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas. He received his master’s degree from Arkansas State and doctorate from Arkansas Tech. 2021 marks his 20th year in education and fourth year heading up the Decatur School District.
“Decatur is a great school system to work for and to have students enrolled in,” Watkins began. “The small, family atmosphere allows our teachers to adapt instruction to a more personalized approach. Teachers and staff know each student, their strengths and weaknesses, and can spend more time with them building relationships and supporting academics as well.”
A lot of improvements have been taking place over the past few years in the Decatur School District. They completed their middle school renovation and new PE facility in 2019. They are now finishing up the high school renovation and new student dining/commons area. “Our new facilities are almost ready,” Watkins pointed out. “We are so excited to see the changes that the new buildings and construction bring to the community.”
In preparation of the new academic year, teachers and administration met regularly to make sure that they follow the most up to date guidance from the Arkansas Department of Health and the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. They also met to prepare lessons and learning opportunities to ensure quality instruction and a positive educational experience.
Of course, COVID-19 remains an issue of utmost concern for both educators and parents. “Considerable procedures and precautions will continue to be instituted with fidelity, and it will require teachers, staff, students and families working together to create the safest environment possible in the school setting,” Watkins said. “We will educate and recommend the most effective practices that reduce the spread of COVID-19 which include vaccination, face coverings, physical distancing, healthy hygiene, regular handwashing, reducing contact, practicing personal responsibility by staying home when one is sick and, most importantly, protecting the most vulnerable in our population.”
For all of the parents in the Decatur School District, Dr. Watkins has a special message. “You are your child’s first teacher,” he said. “Parents are a vital part of our students’ education. We want to partner with you as we plan and implement both personal and academic opportunities.”
Involving parents and students in student success planning, school and community events has always been very important to the educators in Decatur. “We believe it takes a village to successfully provide the best possible learning experience,” the superintendent noted. “Parents are invited to engage in conversations with teachers, staff and students about programs, lessons and activities. We invite all community members and parents to follow us on social media and log onto our school website to see latest updates and information related to the school district.”
Of course, the students in Decatur School District are what it’s all about. And Watkins has a message for them, too. “We believe in you,” he said. “You have someone in your corner who will be there for you. You all matter, every one of you, every day! As teachers and staff, we believe that all students can learn. We want to provide you with the best possible educational experience. We value student input and care about what you have to say. Students are encouraged to do their best every day, do work you can be proud of and make today a great day.”
Decatur is excited to get the year started and welcome the students back. The administration, staff and teachers are looking forward to helping forge Decatur’s leaders of tomorrow.
