GRAVETTE — The 19th annual Gravette Lion Golf Classic has been scheduled for Saturday, April 23, at the Highland Golf Course in Bella Vista.

The event is a fourperson scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The event has been labeled as the John Edwards Gravette Golf Classic in recent years in honor of the former Gravette school board member who started the tournament in 2002.

Although Edwards established the tournament in 2002, this is the 19th annual event since one year was skipped due to covid restrictions. Edwards was joined in the early years by Jack Skillett, another Gravette school board member, also from Bella Vista, who assisted him in recruiting sponsors and players for the event.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Gravette schools’ fine arts and athletic programs, according to Norman Mitchell, Gravette schools’ athletic director. The popular golf classic, sponsored by the Gravette High School Booster Club, has raised thousands of dollars over the last several years to help fund activities, including athletics, drama, vocal and instrumental music, cheerleaders, HOSA and the arts, as well as providing academic achievement awards.

Both men and women will be competing in the tournament and prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, hole in one and longest drive. Lunch will be provided.

Various businesses and individuals have been recruited as hole and tournament sponsors for the golf classic.
