Lady Pioneers defeat Lady Panthers

- MAKENA WOMACK

GENTRY — The Lady Pioneers traveled to Clarksville to play soccer against the Lady Panthers in a fierce game on April 1. This game would have been their second conference game of the season. All of their practice paid off because they beat the Panthers with a great final score of 3-1.

The game had a very slow start. Neither of the teams scored in the first half. However, the second half is when the scoring started when Gentry scored three points and the Panthers only scored one.

The girls played that evening at 5 p.m., and it was a rainy but warm game.

“Freshman Cayci Capps had a hat trick with three goals, assisted by sophomore Kaitlyn Caswell,” said Coach Jamie Johnson after the game.

She continued, “Sophomore Maya Robinson did well, stepping up and playing in goal in the second half, a position she has never played or practiced before. Other goalkeepers for this game were Kaitlyn Caswell and senior Kailey Ward. Both shut out the other team, allowing no goals.”

“They did well at making adjustments at halftime and shooting more. We need to keep working on talking to each other on the field. The game went well; I would have liked to have scored in the first half but the girls listened and made adjustments that were needed,” Johnson concluded.

“I think the team worked together and moved the ball down the field and set me up for some great shots. I think that I played very well and, thanks to my team, I scored three goals. I think the game went great. We worked hard and overcame the challenges like the heat, and we came out with a win!” said Capps.

“I think we did well on communicating with each other but could improve on using our teammates more. I think the game went well after the second half started. After our first goal was scored, we got some confidence back to win the game,” said Ward.
