EUREKA SPRINGS — The tent was pitched, the campsite was set and ready to go, as the Decatur Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs prepared for 36 events in the 2022 2A West district track meet at the outdoor track facility in Eureka Springs on April 27.

Off in a distant corner of the track, assistant coach Tahji Turner worked with Jaksyn McAdams, Dayton McGarrah and Devin Thor on handoff prior to the start of the 4x100 relay race.

Off in a building on the north side of the complex, head coach Shane Holland met with other coaches from Yellville-Summit, Flippin, Eureka Springs, Cotter and Life Way Christian for the pre-event briefing. Soon the events began, with the shot put, discus throw, high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump.

Sitting with his back against the corner of a soccer goal, Mason Potter texted with his phone and picked at a few blades of grass as teammates Heaven McGarrah, Lindy Lee, Jackson Montano, Brian Ruiz and Lorelai Tuinstra rest under the tent, with events about to begin.

During the end of the day, two grueling events face distant runner Heaven McGarrah, the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. In the 1,600, Heaven started up behind a runner from Flippin. In the final half lap before the finish, Heaven pulled out ahead and never looked back as she won the event.

During the longest race of the meet, the 3,200, Heaven took the lead from the starting block and was never challenged. She kept a steady pace and her fluid motion as she moved around the track was sheer poetry in motion. She finished in first place, nearly 25 seconds ahead of her second-place finisher.

In all, the Decatur boys took seven gold (firsts), three silver (seconds) and eight bronze (thirds) medals for a second-place finish in the meet.

The girls finished in fourth place, earning two gold medals.
