My close relative’s sickness is understood by us who care OPINION? EVERYBODY HAS ONE

We are battling the dreaded pinkeye and mostly pneumonia in unborn calves. Does that make sense to you? It does to me as I have buried lots of dead calves and had to dock lots of blind ones.

I am gonna try the newest and hopefully the best vaccination available on the market. We have been putting all the springers through the chute for the process of having the healthiest group of calving cows this spring. We know February is too early for calves but I am outvoted! Lot of work, putting big cows through the chute, but the added benefit will make a big difference if it works!

The wonderful life we are so fond of is not without cost. I figure the science of brilliant men is worth trying and if it works, we will be the ones so blessed! The covered pens are worth their salt and keep me on the job! The boys are spoiled with the luxury of them and don’t know what it would be like in the real world. So we have science and muscles both working on this outfit, which is a long step away from where I started!

My close relative has a cold in her nose and we are supposed to stay away from her germs. The only person welcomed in that house is the granddaughter who loves the paint pony every evening. She has been seeing to her grandmother with all kinds of medication and love. She even managed to get our female offspring, her mother, to fix a meal and have it hot and ready for Sunday supper! I sure liked that and the offspring have continued to take care of business since that. She is sure like her mother, and I am bragging!

We feed and hay, check water and shiver on the routes around the place on the cold days. I have to roll the window down to be able to count cattle and that wipes out any warmth the heater has managed. I figure all the beef producers are in the same fix and we hope to get some relief in about a month. February is mostly the meanest of the winter months around here. I don’t saddle up when the stirrup leathers are stiff so the old ponies are getting fatter and also older!

I had coffee at the round table today. I stopped by there this afternoon after going for milk and bread. Lee Kirby was talking about the buck he got last fall and how good the steaks were. He was sure a proud hunter and the antlers were something to be proud of too! He was hoping to have them back by now to show off but the man was swamped that mounts them. I guess we had a good year and lots of deer were taken. I like to know that and hope we always have more than plenty of game for the legal hunters.

My lessons today are so important to remember as a father and a husband. The illness of my close relative is a sickness to be understood by us who care, and the wonderful help provided by the family is priceless! Sure enough a cold and not a dreadful or dastardly disease but very miserable. The importance of a partner cannot be stressed too much. Sure hope I remember that on the 14th!

Hope your long johns are doing the trick, and maybe some extra layers in this cool weather! Do not think you can spit far enough out the window to miss the vehicle as it will freeze and land on the fender! Take care of your long arms and Remember the Alamo!
