The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton took place at Westminste­r Abbey in London in 2011. Viewed by two billion people worldwide, the $34-million affair was rooted in tradition. The lace technique of Kate’s gown was “something old,” her parents gifted her a “new” pair of earrings, she “borrowed” a tiara from the queen and a piece of “blue” ribbon was sewn into the lining of her dress!

General Mills Cheerios hit grocery store shelves in 1941 as Cheerioats; the name was changed in 1945. For decades, the original recipe was the best-selling cereal in the U.S. Then in 1979, Honey Nut Cheerios came on the market and proved so popular, it surpassed the classic version in 2009 and has kept the top spot ever since!

George Washington, the military leader of the American Revolution, was inaugurate­d as the first U.S. president at Federal Hall in New York City in 1789. Thousands of people gathered for the celebratio­n, which included cannons, fireworks and gallivanti­ng through the streets. In fact, the streets were so crowded, Washington reportedly was forced to abandon his carriage and walk home!

Apple introduced the itunes music store in 2003. With a catalog of over 26 million songs, the world’s most popular music store sells an average of 15,000 songs every minute— which means roughly 26 billion songs have been downloaded since its inception!

The Disney-mgm Studios theme park opened in Orlando, Florida, in 1989. Renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2007, the park features blockbuste­r attraction­s like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and rides like Aerosmith’s famous guitar-shaped Rock ‘n’ Roller coaster. Up next: Toy Story Land, opening this summer, which will feature a family-friendly Slinky Dog roller coaster!
