Enjoy coffee this way

The caffeine in your morning java might wake you up fast, but that quick rush can cause you to crash later—and even lead to adrenal fatigue. “Taking in too much caffeine too often can knock our fightor-flight response out of whack,” explains naturopath Michelle Schoffro Cook, PH.D., author of 60 Seconds to Slim. The fix: Brew up a pot made with one scoop of regular coffee and three scoops of decaf, which delivers the optimal energyboosting dose of caffeine. Enjoy four cups throughout the morning.

See (and wear) red!

Red is nature’s alarm system, which alerts the brain to wake up and take notice. The color is so powerful that researchers at the University of Rochester found simply looking at it energizes athletes and quickens their reaction time. But you don’t need to be a marathon runner to take advantage of red’s energizing effects, says Alexis Alvarez, a color therapy practitioner based in New York: “Whether it’s a pair of pumps, a lipstick or a book bag, wearing the color red helps us awaken our inner drive and motivates us to do our best.” Find your energy flagging at work? Change your computer’s wallpaper to a red-rich landscape to stay focused and energized.

Massage your ears!

For a quick energy boost, try this acupressure technique: While taking slow, deep breaths, gently press and rub your ears, working over the entire outer ear down to the lobes and back up again for 90 seconds. University of Michigan researchers report this strategy stimulates the acupressure points that trigger the production of energizing hormones to chase away tiredness for 90 minutes.
