A new survey reveals that more women now struggle with chronic pain than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Spending more time thinking about pain by reading about it may sound like an odd treatment plan, but researchers at Stanford University say when women delve into exactly what’s triggering (and worsening) their aches and what options may make them feel better, they report 40% more pain relief than if they’d taken prescription medications. Turns out, the sense of control reduces pain-triggering stress. Don’t you feel better already?

Flavor meals with a super spice

To ease chronic pain by up to 73% (results that are on par with prescription painkillers), work 1 tsp. of the spice turmeric into your daily diet or take a supplement that contains the active compound

curcumin. Note: Check with your doctor before starting a supplement.

Use heavy blankets

Getting seven hours of deep sleep nightly can cut aches and pains in half. To hit that healing target, crawl under your heaviest blankets. Swedish researchers say the gentle pressure causes muscles to relax so you can sleep more deeply. And the brain interprets pressure as calming touch, which relieves sleep-disrupting stress.

Reach a little farther

Tufts University researchers say sneaking stretches into your day can cut pain by 36% in three months. Stretching stimulates nerve pathways inside muscles that prompt the release of painkilling endorphins and flush out inflammation.
