Marines to the rescue!

When Woman’s World reader Valerie Cullers of Meridian, Idaho, was stranded late at night, angels disguised as heroes rescued her. She writes:

“I felt a sense of peace and security while with the two Marines like I’d never felt before”

W hile attending college at Southern Oregon University, I met my best friend, Wendy. She was from California, and one day, she asked me to accompany her to visit a friend back in her hometown. Neither of us had a car or much money. And when I asked her how we would get there, she said simply, “We’ll just hitchhike.”

Hitchhiking was very common back in 1970. Still, I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. I expressed my concerns, but Wendy convinced me that we would be fine and it would be an adventure. Her plan was that we’d only accept rides from women, and it sounded somewhat logical to my 19-year-old mind.

At first, everything went well. We got rides from women and we were well on our way down the Redwood Highway. But we still had a ways to go when a driver dropped us off at the side of the road at dusk.

As time passed, no one suitable came by, and soon it became very dark. We were unprepared to spend the night outside since we hadn’t brought sleeping bags or blankets.

I was getting worried and began praying and promising God that if we ever got out of this situation, I’d never hitchhike again. We need angelic

intervention! I thought. Suddenly, a car came out of nowhere and stopped. We looked inside and saw two young men with blond crew cuts. They introduced themselves and told us that they were U.S. Marines on leave.

They expressed concern for our safety, warning us about the dangers of hitchhiking, and offered to take us exactly where we needed to go.

We instantly felt safe and agreed to let them give us a ride. There was a sense of peace and security in their car that I had never felt before. After they delivered us safely to our destination, I was convinced they were angels. I never hitchhiked again, and I will always be grateful to those two angel Marines who came to our rescue at just the right time!
