3 tips for a fun-filled luau

-

1 Build a perfect fruit plate

Offer up a taste of the tropics with a colorful fruit platter that includes exotic options found in the produce aisle this time of year, like dragon fruit, kiwi, mango and papaya. To do: Slice fruit and group by type on a plate. Fill in any open spaces with slices of banana, fresh blooms and halved limes. Tip: Squeeze limes over the fruit to keep it from browning and to add a hint of zesty flavor.

2 Relax with island tunes

A playlist of island-inspired music will make you feel like you’re at a relaxing tropical retreat. Simply search for the “Hawaiian Dreams” playlist on Spotify for breezy ukulele music, or try “The Hawaiian Party” playlist for upbeat tunes that’ll boost everyone’s mood. Prefer CDS? Order Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawaii” ($ 8, Amazon.com) for a fun retro vibe or “Luau Party” ($16, Amazon.com) for authentic Hawaiian music.

3 Delight with luau games

After enjoying sweets and sips, try some easy games. Set up stations around your yard with a Hula- Hoop contest, limbo and pineapple bowling (line up pineapples like bowling pins on grass, then knock them down by rolling coconuts). The winner of each round gets a faux floral lei. Whoever has the most leis gets a special prize, like a gift card or scratch- off lottery ticket.
