A sweet scent

During two separate times of distress, Woman’s World reader Margie Martin Gabe’s mother sent an unmistakable sign of comfort. She writes:

-

When my mother passed away in 2005 just shy of her 81st birthday, I was devastated even though I knew it was her time. Mom had always been an elegant woman. an. She dressed at the he height of fashion and loved high heels, as she was petite. She never left the house without her makeup on, her hair done and wearing her signature scent.

At her ser vice, she had requested that her favorite poem, “Invictus,” be recited. My older sister and I took on that task together, taking turns reciting the verses. When we sat back down, I had an amazing experience.

I smelled a very sweet, familiar scent wafting through the room. I had an overwhelming feeling of well-being. My mother was there. I felt her. I couldn’t believe the amazing feeling. All of the sadness I had been feeling over the last few days suddenly vanished.

Fast for ward to March 2021, and I was seriously ill with a treatable intestinal infection that could be prone to complications. I was having a rough time. I had a reaction to the antibiotics. I suffered a lot of pain, and the pain medicine I was given did not help. I was also als having gastric reactions to the th medicine. I was having panic pan and anxiety attacks.

It was a rough couple of weeks, and we were still going through the stress of the pandemic.

One evening, I was rela xing in my recliner with my heating pad to help with the pain when, suddenly, that same sweet scent from Mom’s funeral ser vice wafted through the room. I started smiling and laughing uncontrollably. I had that feeling of well-being again.

My mother was there. She was there to tell me not to worry, that I would soon be all right and I would fully recover— and I did.

I am not a religious person. I have questions. But after those t wo experiences, I am a believer of angels.

“I had an overwhelming feeling of wellbeing!”
