Lieutenant accused of sleeping on job to retire
NEWPORT (AP) — A Rhode Island police lieutenant accused of sleeping during overnight shifts will retire following a plea agreement.
Timothy Panell, 47, of Tiverton, pleaded not guilty to obtaining money under false pretenses. The charge will be removed in one year if Panell doesn't face additional charges. He will also retire June 30.
Fifty-seven other charges were dismissed.
Tiverton police received a tip in March 2016 that a police cruiser was parked in Panell's driveway when he was on duty. Police observed Panell parked in his driveway when he was scheduled to work before a Massachusetts detective outfitted his car with a tracking device.
