Loving Luxembourg

-

As part of Galeries Lafayette’s international push, the French department store will open a flagship in Luxembourg in late 2019.

The six-story, 100,000-squarefoot location is to be created in partnership with CODIC, a European real-estate developer, it said on Tuesday.

The store will be in the Royal-Hamilius urban planning project built by Norman Foster and his firm Foster and Partners, which will encompass shopping areas, housing, offices and services.

“This new opening demonstrates our ambition to accelerate the international reach of our Galeries Lafayette brand,” Nicolas Houzé, chief executive officer of Galeries Lafayette and BHV Marais, said in a statement. “This takes place in a bordering country of France, where our fashion knowhow is very appreciated by both local and international clients.”

Luxembourg boasts more than 3.5 million visitors from abroad annually.

Galeries Lafayette has eight flagship stores outside of France and a goal to open 20 new locations in key cities globally over the next five years. Coming up are openings in Doha, Qatar, in the fall and in Shanghai at year-end. New stores are also planned for next year, in Kuwait City and Istanbul, while a flagship is slated for Milan in 2021. — JENNIFER WEIL
