It’s a Family Affair

Less than a week after sponsoring the Brooklyn Museum's Artists Ball gala fundraiser, Dior was back at the museum, with even more friends of the house. The brand presented its pre-fall collection in the museum's Beaux-Arts Court on Monday evening, which was transformed into a runway with feminist neon art sculptures by artist Claire Fontaine installed around the perimeter of the room.

“I'm so happy to be here; I'm so happy to be home — and to have Dior come to me,” said actress Rachel Zegler. “It's so nice to be in Brooklyn. I'm a born and raised New Yorker, so getting to live here and work here and come see beautiful fashion here is nice.” The actress, an ambassador for the brand, opted for a velvet shorts-and-jacket suit set. “They actually custom made it for me because I really, really wanted it, and it didn't really come in my size,” she added. “But they did make it for me, and I'm thrilled.”

The show turned out to be a family occasion: Naomi Watts attended with her daughter, as did Charlize Theron and Mickalene Thomas, while Anya Taylor-Joy brought along her husband Malcolm McRae. Other front row guests included Rosamund Pike, who donned a pair of sunglasses and greeted Thomas with a hug, Michelle Williams, Alexandra Shipp, Diane Kruger, Anna Diop, Team USA surfer Carissa Moore and K-pop star Haerin of NewJeans, who strolled into the venue with an entourage.

Singer Tony Yu, who's based in China but lived in New York while he was a student at New York University, was in town just for the evening.

“We're coming as a representative for Dior China, and coming here to see the show for the fall 2024 women's collection,” Yu said. “It's very interesting because Dior doesn't do quite as many shows in New York as in Paris. The street vibe here is totally different, and it's a different feel than the Paris romantic aesthetic,” he added. “So I'm really excited to see what's happening today.”

After Maria Grazia Chiuri took her post-show bow, Fontaine's sculptures — which reference female anatomy — began to flicker. There was more feminist art in store for the evening.

The room's lights dimmed as the runway show seating transformed into after party lounge spaces. A sequestered VIP area in one of the museum's corridors provided a private space for Dior's starriest VIP guests to unwind. In the main room of the Beaux-Arts Court, Thomas caught up with museum director Anne Pasternak; “The New Look” director Todd Kessler was toasting the evening with a glass of Champagne, and Heather Kemesky, Cass Bird, Jenna Lyons and JD Samson of Le

Tigre hung out by the DJ booth.

The party hit its crescendo as Kim Gordon, formerly of Sonic Youth, appeared onstage. “Can you turn the lights down a little bit?” said Gordon, peering out at the crowd as she launched into “The Candy House,” off her recent album.

Chiuri, an enthusiastic supporter of female artists, was vibing to the set from atop one of the seating areas with Brigitte Lacombe. The siren song of a feminist rock icon proved too strong to resist, as they were soon joined by Pike, donning a pair of dark sunglasses as she stepped up to the elevated platform to watch Gordon whip around the stage.
