San Luis firefighters put out a car on fire along Highway 95 at County 21st Street Monday morning.

According to fire department spokesperson Luis Cebreros, at about 10:08 a.m. firefighters responded to the location for a report of a vehicle on fire in the southbound lane of that location.

“A black column of heavy dense smoke could be seen about a couple miles away from the fire station when the fire truck and several other fire suppression vehicles left the station,” Cebreros said.

Once on scene, firefighters found a passenger car fully engulfed in flames but it was quickly put out using a foam suppression system on the department’s new fire truck.

Cebreros said the owner of the vehicle told firefighters that he noticed smoke coming from behind the car’s stereo he turned it off.

A short time later, when he saw fire, Cebreros said the driver pulled his vehicle over onto the shoulder of the road, got out, and waved down a passerby for help.

After calling 911, the owner stated that he opened the door to his vehicle and was knocked back from the intense smoke and fire.

Cebreros said the 43-year old male patient was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
