What’s your favorite dog breed? If you picked Labrador retriever, you aren’t alone.

According to the American Kennel Club, it was the number one dog breed in 2016.

In fact, the dog has been the top breed for 26 consecutive years. Obviously, Americans love their labs. And really, what’s not to love? According to Dog Time, the Labrador was “bred to be both a friendly companion and a useful working dog breed.” The site notes that historically, the breed worked with fishermen, hauling nets and retrieving fish, and today, can hold a variety of jobs, such as assistance dogs, search and rescue, and retrieving game for hunters.

Labs are sweet, family friendly dogs, and often spotted out and about around Yuma.

Boxers also made the list, which, if Yuma is any indication, is no surprise. Boxers are another breed commonly spotted in and around Yuma.

In fact, several large breeds made the top 10 list, including golden retrievers, German shepherds and rottweilers.

Rottweilers may sometimes give people pause, but the breed has an interesting history. Dog Time notes the dogs were originally bred to drive cattle to market, and were among the earliest police dogs. The site notes that when properly cared for, “the Rottweiler is a natural guard dog with a mellow disposition who is successful not only in police, military, and customs work, but also as a family friend and protector.”
