Slime craze leads to boom in glue sales

But parents, be careful of the other ingredients

If you have a child in elementary school in Yuma, there’s a chance they’ve come home clamoring to make slime.

The craze has swept the nation over the last year, with children making the slippery, squishy concoction at home out of ingredients like glue and borax.

In fact, Elmer’s Glue plans to boost production, according to a CBS MoneyWatch report, because kids are snapping up glue to use in their slime recipes. During the last four weeks of 2016, liquid glue sales more than doubled, CBS reports.

But the craze has an element of danger of which parents need to be aware.

According to a report in USA Today, an 11-year-old girl, Kathleen Quinn, received second- and thirddegree burns all over her hands from using borax in her slime recipe. Quinn had used borax repeatedly in the past without issue, until her hands suddenly ran into issues.

USA Today notes there was another incident in the United Kingdom, where borax in slime was blamed for chemical burns and blisters on a child’s hands.

Parents, this doesn’t mean that children need to stop making slime right this second. It’s a science experiment that children are embracing. And there is a bit of a therapeutic element to slime as well, giving children a hands-on, homemade stress reliever, as they work the slime over.

However, there are a variety of recipes out there that don’t use borax or detergent as an ingredient.

A quick youtube search found videos using a combination of glue, Epsom salt, water and food coloring, while other ingredients included toothpaste, baking soda or shaving cream.

There are hundreds of videos out there from which your children can choose. And trying something other than borax or laundry detergent expands the experiment notion behind these creations. “What happens if I use this …?” It’s a great way for children to experience cause and effect, while having fun at the same time.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

Well, now we know what the Republicans, led by House Speaker Paul Ryan, really want to do about health care. They do not want or believe you deserve health care. They say they will provide “access” meaning good luck, go find it on your own with all the benefits left out.

The Republicans’ final plan to replace Obamacare was going to eliminate all “essential services.” They included doctors visits, emergency services, hospitalization, mental health and substance abuse, prescription drugs, lab tests, pediatrics, maternity coverage, rehabilitation and preventive services. In other words, you would not have a plan except some expensive “high risk pools” which you could not afford because this was what we had 10 years ago and the premiums were 4 to 5 times higher than anyone else paid. I know because I owned an insurance company and I dealt with these insurance companies that did want anyone with a medical problem.

In 2018 you have an opportunity to go vote for someone who actually cares about your health. We must get rid of these elected officials who care nothing about one of the most essential needs we have and that is our health care. I have Medicare and I like it. My husband has V.A. insurance and he likes it. All citizens in this country deserve the same health care. We are the richest nation in the world and we cannot continue to deny a basic right that all progressive nations around the world provide. Get out and VOTE in 2018 for people who care about your basic right! wife passed away Nov. 1, 2016. She missed our 71st anniversary by three days.

I hope to be with her someday in heaven.

Don’t wait til it’s too late to say, “I love you”

It’s a phrase she’ll love to hear o’er and o’er

Too often men will wait, until it’s much too late

To let her know he couldn’t love her more.

Remember when you say it, really mean it

Let her know that she’s your special prize

And let her know you’ll love her forever

And always hold her close, if you’re wise.

A woman needs to hear you say you love her

And to know that you mean it when you do

So you know when you say it, really mean it

Then she will say those same words back to you.

So don’t wait til it’s too late to say, “I love you”

I’ve said it many times, it ain’t that tough

Now I realize, when I had my special prize

I never said it often enough — I just never said it often enough.
