Cibola baseball beats San Luis in region opener

The Cibola baseball team opened 6A Southern play Tuesday with a 7-5 victory over San Luis.

Joaquin Martinez (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Roman Valenzuela (2-for-3, RBI), David Cuadros (2-for-4, RBI) and Steven Cisneros (2-for-4) led the way offensivel­y for the Raiders, who scored five runs in the second inning and led from there.

Martin Franco (4.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER) was the winning pitcher, while Martinez (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 K) earned the save.

Ramon Miranda had three hits for the Sidewinder­s. Arturo Gil (4.1 IP, 11 H, 7 ER) took the loss.

Cibola and San Luis will play twice more this week, on Thursday and Friday.

MORE PREP BASEBALL Red Mountain 6, Kofa 3

Enrique Porchas was the Kings’ top offensive performer, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Buckeye Union 3, Gila Ridge 2

Gimo Dukes and Owen Parcel had three hits each for the Hawks (1-7 AIA, 0-3 region), while Chance Morland and Connor Young had two each. Andres Cota received the toughluck loss, allowing just one earned run in a complete-game effort on the mound. Buckeye (6-2, 2-1) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an error.

Yuma High 9, Youngker 4

Alex Guerra (3-for-3, double), Ulises Bustillos (3-for-4), Danny Arriola (2-for-4, double), Saul Millan (2-for-4) and Ulises Cordero (2for-4) led the way offensivel­y for the Criminals (2-7 AIA, 2-1 region). Millan pitched a complete game to earn the victory.

San Pasqual 12, Valley Lutheran 2

Frankie Rodriguez racked up 15 strikeouts over six innings for the Warriors (4-5 AIA, 3-1 region), who scored nine runs over the final two innings to pull away. Ralph Dominguez led the offensive charge with four hits, while Alex Zavala added two hits.

PREP SOFTBALL Cibola 17, San Luis 0

Cielo Echols (3-for-4, RBI), Christina Robles (2-for-2, 3 RBIs), Kamryn Moctezuma (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), Nicole Villa (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Madison Sierra (2-for-2, triple, RBI) led the way offensivel­y for the Raiders (8-0 AIA, 1-0 region). Sierra was the winning pitcher.

Fabriely Bobadilla and Kiabeth Soto had one hit each for the Sidewinder­s (3-5, 0-1).

Yuma Catholic 16, Casteel 7

Jessica Padilla went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a grand slam and a whopping eight RBIs, while Josie Hernandez went 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs.

The Shamrocks improved to 4-0 AIA and 1-0 region with the victory.

PREP GIRLS TENNIS Cibola 8, Maricopa 1

No. 1 Abby Kern, No. 3 Amulya Doniparthi, No. 4 Kelsey Berger, No. 5 Victoria DeCorse and No. 6 Sarah Trujillo all picked up singles victories for the Raiders, who improved to 5-3 AIA and 2-0 Division I Section I with the victory.

Westview 6, Kofa 3

No. 2 Valeria Anguiano and No. 4 Kelsey Ramirez both earned singles victories for the Kings (1-5 AIA, 0-1 section). Anguiano and Nataly Prieto won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-0.

JUCO SOFTBALL Matadors split with Pumas

The Arizona Western softball team split a doublehead­er with Paradise Valley on Tuesday, winning game one 3-2 and losing game two 9-7.

Caylin Espericuet­a totaled a team-high four hits on the day, while Julie Roach and McKenna Pisciotta each had two.

The Matadors (27-14 overall, 1913 ACCAC) next play Saturday at Central Arizona.

JUCO BASEBALL AWC swept at Mesa

The Arizona Western baseball team lost 1-0 and 9-4 at Mesa on Tuesday.

Landon Riker was the Matadors’ top offensive performer on the day, totaling five hits (including a game two home run) in the two games. Spencer Packard had two hits in game, Sean Roby had three hits in game two and Najee Gaskins had two hits in game two.

The Matadors dropped to 27-10 overall and 9-8 ACCAC with the losses.
